How to distinguish between bad car polishing & good polishing

car polishing

There is a common misconception in the detailing business that waxing makes a car shine. It’s a
car polishing that makes your car shine by eliminating scratches, brightening dull or faded paintwork, removing swirl marks, oxidation, and other pollutants, and leaves the paint smooth, clean, and gleaming. Yes, wax aids in the gleaming of paintwork, but it also serves to maintain already polished paintwork.

Poor polishing may have severe implications for both the automobile and its owner's car. We'll show you how to spot bad polishing in this post and how to avoid it. But before we dive in to know, let’s know why polishing is important

Why polishing is needed?

The automotive paint is protected by a thick coating of varnish that shields it from the harsh effects of the outside world. The blazing sun warms the car exteriors to extreme temperatures in the summer, acid rains in the fall, ice-melting agents in the winter, and trees abundantly flood the car with their floral goods in the spring, and birds with their residue droppings, and these things affect the car paint.

Small stones dents from under the wheels, as well as hard water with calcium and magnesium salts used in washing, wreak havoc on the car's surface at any time of year. The painting gets loose and corrodes as a result. Hence car polishing acts as a shield provider to protect the car paint. Though polishing is done in two ways one is through hand and another through mechanical process. So, let’s understand what will be best for polishing a car.

Types of polishing

Hand polishing

We've known about polishing technology that it made the surface polished but it’s more than that. Well, car coating or polishing is applied on the car surface, which preserved them from wear while also improving their beauty. The car's surface became less visible as it grew older. One may treat their car manually with polish, which fills in the scratches and conceals them for a while. However, after 7 to 8 washes, the wax weakens and leaves the vehicle's surface under the impact of the sun, and scratches reappear. As a result, the polish operation must be done multiple times every season.

Mechanical polishing

In the mechanical process professional removes the oxidized and deteriorated varnish coat in the car detailing service in order to restore the paint shine of the car. And to do Special equipment is required such as a polisher’s machine, a pad made of wool, foam, or microfiber, and a chemical with varied grain sizes that works as an abrasive substance, are required to achieve this precisely and without harming the body's paintwork. This is why mechanical polishing is also known as abrasive polishing.

When to do it?

Car Polishing should be done as soon as you realize the paint has faded and lost its brilliance. It's time to consider polishing if there are already a lot of scratches that build up a "web."

If scratches, stains, and oxidations on the paintwork did not have time to reach the underlying layer of paint via the varnish, polishing will remove them virtually completely.

The right steps for doing car polishing in the right way

  • Start with washing a car, as with a high-pressure washer hose loosens the dirt & other particles from the body surface.
  • Make sure to use car wash shampoo rather than any other soap
  • After that dry the car completely so, no water spots are leaves behind
  • Then do the polish on the car, by doing it evenly. Never do a polish on a surface that cannot be buffed.
  • Subsequently, rub with a soft dry cloth in a circular motion. Make sure you don’t rub too hard & not in the same direction as it leads to scratches on the car.
  • After the car is polished & shined, apply a thin coat of wax on the surface of the car.
  • Now it’s time to rub the surface with a fresh soft dry cloth. As the wax has rendered a protective layer on the polished surface of the car.
  • Never go for waxing under direct sunlight. Get a shaded area to do it.
  • Before the wax solidifies, polish it off as quickly as possible. If the wax on the surface is already hard, avoid rubbing it. Apply a small amount of wax to the same place to soften it, then massage it away as usual.
  • For polishing and waxing your automobile, use a soft terry cotton cloth or a microfibre cleaning cloth.
